A note on the old open-source Darwin project
OpenDarwin was an open-source project launched in April 2002 with support from Apple and the Internet Systems Consortium. The goal was to give Apple engineers and outside developers a shared place to work on Darwin — the open-source core underneath Mac OS X — so that fixes and improvements could flow back into the official system.
In practice, most of the real development stayed inside Apple rather than happening in the open. Over time OpenDarwin became less of a collaborative development effort and more of a hosting facility for a handful of related projects. Between the difficulty of tracking Apple's source drops, limited interaction with Apple engineers, and dwindling community interest, the project didn't manage to become what it set out to be.
OpenDarwin shut down on July 25, 2006. Some of the community that remained went on to start PureDarwin, an independent successor effort to keep a buildable, freestanding version of Darwin alive.
